Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day seems to be swinging into theaters as Tom Holland’s Spider-Man sequel has grossed a record-breaking $72 million from Thursday previews across 4,300 screens in North America and is set to accumulate even more if its opening day projections have anything to go by. This tops the previous title contender, Avengers: Endgame, which broke the record with $60 million in previews and went on to dominate the 2019 box office, with a total of $357.1 million domestically and $1.2 billion worldwide.
Before Brand New Day, the last Spider-Man film to grace theaters was Spider-Man: No Way Home in December 2021. The feature was a commercial hit, grossing $50 million in Thursday previews, as opening weekend box office saw $260.1 million domestically and $587.2 million globally. With Brand New Day, which has a $225 million production budget, having at least $10 million more in Thursday previews than No Way Home, it could suggest that the film will have an opening weekend that could blow Marvel’s projected $195 million domestic and $465 million worldwide out of the water.
Brand New Day is heading for a new all-time first day/preview opening record between $167M-$173M, which would dethrone Avengers: Endgame’s record of $157.4M. The estimate for Brand New Day’s opening weekend in the domestic box office is approximately $330M at 4,487 theaters, which would make it the second-biggest opening, putting it behind Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1M and Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $260.1 M.
Brand New Day sees Holland as Peter Parker and the Web Slinger once again; this time the superhero has to fight the bad guys all by himself. The film, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, centers on Peter as he grapples with the fallout from Brand New Day, navigates his new life without his loved ones remembering him, and faces new superhero threats. Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Sadie Sink, Jon Bernthal, Liza Colón-Zayas, and Mark Ruffalo also star.
