In the wide world of horror filmmaking, a recent rumor emerged that Glen Powell, best known for his roles in Everybody Wants Some!!, Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, would lead a reboot of the classic horror franchise The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, reportedly stated to be helmed by director J.T. Mollner.
When asked, Mollner replied that although he is appreciative that “people would like to see my version of that,” he also considers the original 1974 film by Tobe Hooper to be a “perfect horror film” and that he is generally wary of remaking projects that he considers to be perfect.
There is also a slight discrepancy on the soundness of these rumors surrounding Powell and Mollner. Mollner has confirmed to have met with Powell to discuss projects yet he finds the rumors based around the Texas Chainsaw Massacre to be “strange” and that he “didn’t know quite where they came from.” Conversely, producer Roy Lee who has worked with Mollner before has addressed “there is some validity to it…but nothing that’s concrete just yet.”
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series since its inception has proven to be a stalwart horror series, and has continually been reinvented for almost every new era of Hollywood. Whether by creator Tobe Hooper himself in the mid-1980s with Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, the 2000s-era Platinum Dunes reboot, or most recently the 2022 incarnation which had received a near-exclusive release on the streamer platform Netflix. Powell, after a long career as a supporting actor of smaller and midsized films with the occasional lead, has used his recent fame to buoy films of various genres, including romantic comedies, such as Anyone But You, crime, such as Hitman, thrillers, such as The Running Man and disaster blockbusters, such as Twisters. If these rumors are true and he does take on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre series, it would be interesting to see how Powell develops his acting form and skillset to a genre form markedly different from what audiences have seen him dominate in.
