Despite the film’s pre-release controversy and seeming fan disinterest in the new Sony film, THR reports that Morbius has earned an impressive $5.7 million in Thursday night previews. Sony maintains a $33 million estimate for opening weekend, citing the film’s different take on the superhero film. Jared Leto stars as Dr. Michael Morbius, a biochemist turned paranormal vampire whose morality and need to feed on human blood to survive leaves him in a never-ending dilemma to survive. This is Morbius’ first live-action appearance and a surprising one for such a minor and obscure character.
The film exists under the Sony Marvel Universe umbrella, but fans have speculated for some time that this would be the film to merge with the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes (alias Vulture) was first seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony crossover film Spider-Man: Homecoming and has appeared in nearly every trailer. This possibly hints at the first explicit connection between the two universes.
Alongside Leto and Keaton, the film also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, and Tyrese Gibson. Daniel Espinosa helms the film as director with a script penned by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless. The film is produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and Lucas Foster. Morbius is showing in theaters now.
