Sony Spider-Man Spin-Off ‘Silver and Black’ Further Delayed

Even with the Tom Hardy Venom movie set for an October release date, Sony is unfortunately learning the hard way that building a Spider-Man universe without Spider-Man is difficult. After all, as iconic as his allies and rogues gallery are, it is their interactions with Spider-Man himself that give them greater narrative purpose. However, having failed to build up a Spider-Man universe with the Andrew Garfield movies, it appears Sony is destined to watch Marvel Studios effortlessly create the more competent cinematic world.

Now Spider-Man fans will have to wait bit longer to glimpse the final non-MCU Spider-Man product. As stated by EW, the superhero spin-off Silver and Black has been removed from Sony’s 2019 release schedule and has been pushed back for further development. The film, whose plot would have been a team up between notable femme fatale characters Silver Sable and Black Cat, was meant to follow Venom as another chapter in this upcoming franchise. Instead, the February 8, 2019 date will be filled by an upcoming Tom Hanks WWII drama, titled Greyhound.

In hindsight, delaying Silver and Black might be necessary for Sony until it can confirm the validity of this cinematic universe. Without any idea of how Venom will be received, the studio is simply developing its franchise too far in advance, and we’ve seen the failed results of such business decisions before. Looking at you, Dark Universe.
