Sony Sets October 16 Release Date for Dan Rather Drama ‘Truth’

Sony Pictures Classics has announced an October 16 release date for TruthThe film deals with the 2004 scandal that tarnished the reputation of respected CBS news anchor Dan Rather and ultimately led to his resignation.

Robert Redford (A Walk in the Woods) portrays Rather, who famously reported on lapses in President George W. Bush’s Air National Guard service during the Vietnam War. The documents Rather based his reporting on were not able to be authenticated, and were dismissed by some as out-and-out forgeries.

The film is based on the memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power, written by Rather’s producer Mary Mapes. Mapes, played by Cate Blanchett (Cinderella) in the film, eventually lost her job amidst the scandal.

Topher Grace (American Ultra), Elisabeth Moss (TV’s Mad Men), Bruce Greenwood (Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer prequel), and Dennis Quaid (Footloose) join Redford and Blanchett in the cast.  The film marks the directorial debut of James Vanderbilt (best know for his writing duties on Zodiac and The Amazing Spider-Man), who adapted the screenplay from Mapes’ memoir.

Sony is planning a rollout in New York and Los Angeles, expanding nationwide shortly after.
