The battle of the Spider-Men continues between Marvel and Sony with the latest announcement that Sony will be making new animated version of the superhero with producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie). The film is set to come out July 20, 2018, one year after Marvel’s live-action Spider-Man installment comes out July 28, 2017. Sony Pictures chairman, Tom Rothman, clarified “the film will exist independently of the project in the live-action Spider-Man universe.”
While the two studios now split the rights to Spider-Man the character, it seems clear that each will be taking the hero in different directions. Now that Marvel has Spider-Man, he will be making his first cameo within the superhero movies in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War coming out May 6, 2016.
The decision to make an animated ‘Spider-Man’ is not a new one. Since the comic book debuted in 1962, Spider-Man grew fast in popularity, and in 1967 became an animated television show. Since then every decade has seen a resurgence of the superhero in animated form. This will be the first film with an animated Spider-Man but it has a long legacy to live up to.
The animated Spider-Man is set to debut in 2018, meantime, there will be plenty of other chances to see the web-slinger.
