Sony Pictures has acquired Bryan Buckley’s The Bronze, a comedy written by Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory) and her husband, Winston Rauch. Currently, the independent picture is shooting in Ohio. The Bronze follows Hope Greggory (Rauch) as a former gymnast who can’t handle losing fame, when the foul-mouthed medalist’s local stardom is threatened by a younger athlete on the rise.
The “Super Bowl King,” Buckley is new to feature film directing, but has made over 50 well-received Super Bowl commercials. Recent Super Bowl commercials include the Scarlett Johansson starring Sodastream, and his Grey Poupon commercial, The Chase, which won an Emmy in 2013. Additionally, he scored an Oscar nomination in 2012 for Asad, a live action short filmed in Africa, about a Somali boy’s struggles in a war-torn environment.
Bronze’s executive producers, Jay and Mark Duplass have a history of producing, writing, and directing comedies together. They previously co-wrote and directed Jeff, Who Lives at Home (2011), featuring Jason Segel and Ed Helms, and Cyrus (2010), starring John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, and Jonah Hill.
Rauch is known for her role on The Big Bang Theory as Bernadette, which she has been a part of since 2009. Additionally, she was featured in a few True Blood episodes and John Hamburg’s film I Love You Man (2009). Both she and her husband, Winston have previously co-written the short, Condom Killer (2009). Bronze will be the first feature that either of them have written.
In addition to Rauch, the cast also includes Gary Cole (Office Space), Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Thomas Middleditch (The Wolf of Wall Street), and Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The First Avenger).
Although Bronze has no official release date as of now, it has been suggested to hit the theatres in 2015. We look forward to unveiling more information as Sony continues with production.
