Sony Releases ‘Morbius’ Character Vignette and New Trailer Announcement

In anticipation of the long-awaited Morbius, starring Jared Leto, Sony has released a 60-second character vignette for the character along with a new trailer announcement. Leto discusses in the vignette Morbius’ comic origins, saying “Morbius appeared first as an antagonist in The Amazing Spider-Man [comic] in 1971 and eventually evolved into more of an anti-hero.” The character will most likely be portrayed in this way in the upcoming film – more anti-heroic than villainous. He goes on to say that Marvel originally forbade usage of supernatural characters, but has since become more open to them due to positive fan reactions.

In the comics, Dr. Michael Morbius, originally a famed biochemist, turned into a pseudo-vampiric human after a failed experiment attempting to cure his rare blood disorder. After this transformation, he became known simply as Morbius and struggled with his humanity versus vampiric tendencies, often craving human blood. The comics have shown Morbius in more villainous roles, as a vigilante, and constantly trying to cure his affliction. It will be fun to see the take Leto decides to bring to the character and how it might tie into the comic character. The brief video also announces that the final trailer will be released on Monday, just over a month before the film opens in theaters on April 1.
