Big news from Sony Pictures: The studio has reportedly decided to launch (or re-launch, depending on how you look at it) their own Marvel Universe separate from the Marvel’s current MCU. The film will be a standalone for the Spider-Man villain Venom, making this one of the first comic book films to place an ancillary character in the starring role. What’s even more exciting is that they’ve announced that they plan to follow the footsteps of Logan and produce the film with an R-rating.
Dante Harper, a veteran of the film industry, but surprisingly green screenwriter is the man who has landed the opportunity to pen this script. With a set release date of October 5th 2018 it’s clear that the studio is happy with the direction that Harper has taken Venom. While there is a release date and a complete script, Sony has yet to select a director or lead actor for this project
It’s not uncommon for the addition of other creative minds to shift the direction of a film, so who’s to say if the rating, release date, or even credited writer will change before this whole process is complete. At the very least we hope that they keep the R-rating. It’s difficult to imagine an entertaining film that follows Venom for 2 hours while he continually shows restraint for his victims.
The character of Venom was previously essayed on screen by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 (2007).
