Sony Pictures released its first trailer for the upcoming Madame Web film. Set in their Spider-Man universe, the film unveils the clairvoyant Madame Web’s (Dakota Johnson) origin story as she navigates the spider world.
Throughout the trailer, several visions reveal the various women who pick up the Spider-Woman mantle in the original comics: Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced), and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor). The trailer also reveals a mysterious figure wearing a Spider-Man-like costume stalking the four women. Fans have theorized that the figure is Ezekiel Sims (Tahar Rahim) due to last year’s set photos. As a result of these inclusions, many have speculated how Madame Web’s actions will tie into their legacies and the legacy of Spider-Man.
So far, Sony has slated three Spider-Man Universe stories to be released in the upcoming years. From Kraven the Hunter to Venom 3, its producers seek to retell Spider-Man’s story through different characters’ perspectives. Madame Web’s producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura explained, “So, in that respect, if you’re a Spider-Man fan, you’re gonna love the character because you know it from the comic books, which she doesn’t really have that big a character in the comic books.” Since she’s relatively unknown to most fans, di Bonaventura considers it a “really fresh new terrain for the fans.”
Madame Web is scheduled for release on February 16th, 2024.
