It’s confirmed that Sony Pictures Classics will release the awards potential Foxcatcher this December. The latest from director Bennett Miller is being produced courtesy of Megan Ellison and her Annapurna Pictures, and tells the bizarre true story of the relationship between two Olympic champion wrestlers, Mark and David Schultz (played by Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo) and their obsessive fan John du Pont (Steve Carell), a paranoid schizophrenic and heir to the du Pont Chemical fortune.
The film was written by actor/screenwriter Dan Futterman (A Mighty Heart, Oscar-nominated screenwriter of 2005’s Capote) and E. Max Frye (Emmy nominee for co-writing the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers.)
Miller previously directed two films that earned Best Picture nominations: Capote (for which he also earned a directors nomination) and Moneyball. Tatum, coming off the back-to-back-to-back punch of 2012’s The Vow, 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike looks to solidify his acting chops working against type with Ruffalo (famous Hulk replacement in The Avengers, Oscar nominee for 2010’s The Kids Are All Right, and most recently seen in the surprise summer sleeper Now You See Me) and Carell (having a good summer as well with successes Despicable Me 2 and the Sundance crowd-pleaser The Way, Way Back). Vanessa Redgrave, Sienna Miller and Anthony Michael Hall co-star.
The film is currently still in post-production and so far isn’t on the roster to premiere at any of the fall festivals, including Toronto, Venice or New York. However, we will stay tuned to this intriguing-sounding film. A long silence as to the state of Foxcatcher fueled rumored for a 2014 release for some time, but it appears it is set for release on December 20th.
