With news breaking out regarding the fallout between Sony and Disney, the state of the Spider-Man franchise as a part of of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently in limbo. As more details of the situation continue to unfold, it’s now believed that Director Jon Watts will not guaranteed to further his work past the recent Spider-Man entry Far From Home.
Watts’ involvement helped catapult Far From Home to gross $1.9 billion for Sony, also taking the number one spot as their highest grossing film since Skyfall, which grossed $1.8 billion. His vision for the film was praised both by critics and fans alike, making the director’s absence beyond Far From Home one that could create further backlash towards Sony’s handling of the franchise. On Tuesda,y it was reported that Sony reached an impasse with Disney, with both sides unable to reach an agreement. The outlook, as of right now, is looking more and more bleak for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
Without potential director gigs within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony could be at risk of losing Watts entirely for the foreseeable future. Contrary to previous reports, it seems only Tom Holland is safe in this entangled web between the two juggernauts. Sony is still moving forward for not just one, but two more sequels with Tom Holland reprising his role.
