Rachel Lee Goldenberg, the director behind several Funny or Die shorts – including Kristen Bell’s (Frozen) Mary Poppins Quits, the Lady Time series, and A Gay Reporter’s Olympic Trials series – has been tapped by Sony Pictures to direct their EDM romantic comedy I’m in Love With the DJ.
Based on the script by Funny or Die writer Lauryn Kahn, the story follows an American woman travelling through Spain with her two best friends. When an attractive DJ catches her eye, the friends curtail the trip in order to track him down.
Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, and Kevin J. Messick are backing the project through their Gary Sanchez Productions.
Besides extensive work in directing comedy shorts, Goldenberg also won a Primetime Emmy for producing Zach Galifianakis’ Between Two Ferns web series, and also directed the made-for-television movie Escape From Polygamy, about three sisters who escaped from a polygamist cult. I’m in Love With the DJ will be the director’s first major studio film, however, she is clearly ripe for recognition and continued work within the comedy world.
