Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction), Sofia Vergara (Modern Family), and Alice Eve (Men in Black 3) star in The British are Coming, directed by James Oakley (The Devil You Know) and written by Oakley and Alex Michaelides. The film is in post-production with no release date currently set. Autumn Productions and Buffalo 8 Productions are financing with Sunset Boulevard being one of the filming locations. The film also stars Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs), Stephen Fry (Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), Maggie Q (Divergent), Crispin Glover (Hot Tub Time Machine) and Parker Posey (Cafe Society).
Thurman stars as a British con artist who, along with her husband (Tim Roth), goes on the run to Los Angeles to get out of paying a large debt to a gangster. The couple turns to a former associate (Fry) for help, but he secretly sells their whereabouts.
Two years ago, photographer David Armstrong, in an interview with Oakley, asked him about his realization that he wanted to be a filmmaker, to which he replied, “It wasn’t a conscious aspiration, it just was. There wasn’t another option in my mind”. He also talked about watching movies with his grandparents and his grandfather’s profession as a television producer. Oakley further expounded on the European influence on him — “Then I went to NYU cinema studies for film school, so that was four years of intensive theory and studying everything like a year of Goddard–all that sort of stuff”.
Thurman has starred in Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction as well as The Avengers and Batman and Robin. Colombian-born Sofia Vergara has earned accolades for her work on the television show Modern Family. Her other credits include Happy Feet Two and The Smurfs. She also launched a jewelry line in 2014.
The Brits are Coming is still searching for US and international distribution outside of Spain. Until it does, audiences will have to wait a bit longer for Oakley’s latest star-studded project. We will have more on the film as it becomes available.
