Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring premiered at Cannes this past week and has since been collecting sound reviews. The film centers on the true story of a group of Southern California teens that stole millions of dollars worth of items from celebrities ranging from Paris Hilton to Lindsay Lohan. Coppola has received praise for the cast and for the film’s light social commentary on contemporary teens lost in a world of materialism.
Coppola’s career has been a mix of highs and lows. She received critical acclaim as the writer/director of 2003’s Lost in Translation, which was nominated for 4 academy awards including a win for Best Screenplay. Yet response to the highly anticipated Marie Antoinette, release in 2006, was perhaps best captured by the booing it received at Cannes. The film, which went on to win an Academy Award for Best Costume Design, was attacked for Coppola’s historical inaccuracies in portraying the notorious French queen. Coppola has since had to prove herself, with 2010’s Somewhere garnering an underwhelming response and critiques revolving around the film’s lack of substance.
With The Bling Ring’s positive reviews and the buzz that the film has created due to cast members like Emma Watson of Harry Potter and The Perks of Being a Wallflower fame, it looks like Coppola’s latest film might be the spark needed to launch her back to her Lost in Translation status.
