‘Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins’ Starring Henry Golding Deferred Until 2021

Paramount’s Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is just the latest movie to be delayed amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The G.I. Joe spinoff starring Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) was originally set to release October 23, but has now been pushed back to a release sometime in 2021.

The decision to delay Snake Eyes comes after a string of major blockbuster films were also forced multiple times to delay releases. Disney’s live-action Mulan (Niki Caro) and The French Dispatch (Wes Anderson) were taken off the release schedule completely. Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel was also deferred and the entire trio of upcoming Star Wars films were pushed back.

These decisions by Disney followed Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated tentpole, Tenet, took an unconventional turn in its release. The sci-fi action film will debut first in international theaters on Aug. 26, before a limited run in select U.S. cities over Labor Day weekend on Sept. 3.

Production for the Snake Eyes wrapped in February 2020, with Golding writing at the time, “What a crew we had, Vancouver + Japan, you were unstoppable. Thank you for the dedication, this film is going to blow everyone’s socks off.”

Directed by Robert Schwentke (Insurgent), the G.I. Joe spinoff movie focuses on the origin story of the popular sword-wielding member of the G.I. Joe team, where Golding’s title character joins a ninja clan to seek revenge for his father’s death.

Golding is joined by Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Iko Uwais (The Raid: Redemption) and Andrew Koji (Warrior) in Snake Eyes.
