Smile 2 has been a hit at the box office, and people have already been discussing ideas for a potential sequel. The film, similar to its predecessor, has been receiving positive reviews from critics and general audiences, and now director Parker Finn has weighed in on the sequel potential.
In an interview with Collider, Finn revealed that, “I think there are a lot of interesting roads that any future could go down. For me, I love all the stuff that goes bump in the night, and all the really frightening things of the big concept and the Smiler.”
The ending of Smile 2 can be interpreted in a few different ways, but that just leaves more options open for Parker Finn to choose from. Will the Smiler demon choose its next victim from the crows as someone completely different, say a child? Or maybe it spreads its influence on multiple people, creating an epidemic of smiling people.
While the idea of an apocalyptic Smile film sure sounds interesting, Finn seems to want to make sure the series stays grounded in how it began. He says, “For me, Smile is a vehicle to tell really intense and hopefully thoughtful character stories, and so I’d wanna make sure, regardless of if more than one person might have it, that we still find a way to invest intimacy into the storytelling. That’s super important to me. But I think there are some really interesting tricks still up the sleeves of Smile.”
While the future inside of the Smile universe is more dire than ever, the future of the franchise is looking very bright. With the director already teasing the idea of a sequel, expect a third film sooner rather than later.
