Michael Villella, who played the iconic killer Russ Thorn in The Slumber Party Massacre, has died at 84. His death was revealed by his daughter, Chloe Villella, through a Facebook post which read, “May you rest in peace daddy.” He had reportedly been hospitalized for over a month and died from multiple organ failure.
Villella was a standout in the cult classic 1982 film The Slumber Party Massacre, a feminist slasher film directed by Amy Holden Jones. The film was written by Rita Mae Brown and starred Michelle Michaels and Robin Stille alongside Villella. It received mixed critical responses upon release, but over the years more and more people have discovered the film and held it in higher regard.
The film follows a group of teenage girls having a regular sleepover when a psycho killer armed with an auger (or more commonly referred to as a power drill) drops in to crash their party. The film was originally pitched as a slasher parody film, but it eventually morphed into a more traditional slasher while still poking fun at some of the genre’s tropes. The film spawned multiple sequels and is held by many as a horror slasher classic.
Villella debuted as an actor in that film and went on to star in a few other films such as Wild Orchid and Love Letters.
