The sixth movie in the Ice Age franchise was announced at this year’s D23 Brazil. This latest entry in the franchise by Disney and 20th Century Animation will receive a theatrical release. It will be the first Ice Age film since Disney and 20th Century Fox merged and the first since they acquired Blue Sky Studios.
According to Deadline, the “sixthquel” will reunite the original cast members, including stars Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary, and Simon Pegg. It will add to the already expansive franchise, which five current movies also resulted in several shorts and a series, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild. The spinoffs featured starred the mammoth, sloth, saber-toothed tiger, and other pre-historic animals that audiences came to know and love.
To date, the franchise has grossed $3.2 billion total worldwide. The original Ice Age film, codirected by Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha, was released in 2002 and earned $383.3 million. The most financially successful installment in the franchise was the third film, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which grossed more than $886M at the global box office.
