‘Sinners’ Wins Big at the 2026 NAACP Image Awards

If the NAACP Image Awards can be used as an indicator, then Sinners is poised for a big night at this year’s Oscars. Of the 18 nominations it garnered, Sinners won 13 including Best Motion Picture, Best Actor (Michael B. Jordan), and Best Supporting Actor (Delroy Lindo), and Breakthrough Performer (Miles Caton).

These wins come at a poignant time for the Warner Bros. picture. The film has been embroiled in controversy since last week’s BAFTA awards when a guest with Tourette’s syndrome was heard shouting the N-word while Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting an award on stage. The incident has sparked outrage throughout the entertainment industry, and was addressed multiple times at the NAACP Image Awards, including once by Lindo himself. “I’d just like to officially say, I appreciate, we all appreciate all the support and love we have been shown in the aftermath of what happened last weekend. It means a lot to us.” Host Deon Cole also poked fun at the incident during his opening monologue, stating that anyone in the audience with Tourette’s should “read the room”.

Black joy was prominent in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium the night of the awards. When Michael B. Jordan accepted his award for Best Actor, he stated “I love being Black. I love y’all”. He also dedicated the award to his late friend and previous co-star, Chadwick Boseman.

“This is a place where I always felt encouraged, always felt like I was celebrated and nourished… You told me it was OK to keep going because I felt seen here, I felt comfortable, I felt the love. That’s why I love being here and I love you guys so much. And I was thinking about lead actor and I was thinking about what lead actor meant to me, and, honestly, I’ve got to dedicate this award to Chadwick Boseman.”

Quinta Brunson also showed love and support to the Sinners cast while accepting the award for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. “We see you. We’re behind you… we love you.”

The NAACP Image Awards are one of many award shows on the path towards the Oscars, which will be held on March 15, 2026 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. Sinners currently has a record breaking 16 nominations at the ceremony, including Best Feature, Best Actor, and Best Director.
