In the wake of the announcement of this year’s BAFTA Award nominations, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was crowned to have received the highest number of nominations for any film by black director in their history. The film earned 13 BAFTA nominations including:

The film even surpassed the record for highest number of nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it has been nominated for the following 16 Oscars:

With various music styles being at the forefront of nearly every scene while also remaining a focal point of the plot, the film captivates with a vivid portrayal of the liveliness & spirit of cultures old & new. It also proves to be well-rounded in various aspects by providing an intimate look into the Southern American culture of the 1930’s, including the violent racism that still echoes to this day and the resilience of the black community that endured it during that time alongside other oppressed minorities.

Sinners has been breaking records throughout this award season with nominations blowing in from all sides for all the big shows, along with recognition of the thoughtful efforts that propelled this masterpiece (i.e. being the seventh movie in Oscar history to be nominated for each technical category & the seventh black nominee for Best Director). Despite the tabloid cyclone of the WBS potential merger and buyers, the studio surpassed expectations and garnered recognition from various academies for two of its biggest movies of the past year: One Battle After Another and Sinners – both which portrayed scathing truths troubling America’s past & present societies.

Not only is this a list of immensely impressive feats to achieve as a black artist but also as a horror creator that birthed an eerily playful yet beautifully impactful & resonant project – making this an enjoyable & prideful creation to root for in each show and category.

The BAFTA Film Awards will broadcast February 22 on BBC & E!, and The 98th Annual Academy Awards will air March 15 on ABC & Hulu.
