Ryan Coogler’s Sinners continues to succeed at the box office despite the release of the newest Marvel Studios film, Thunderbolts*. The box office for Sinners was greatly aided by IMAX screenings, which were heavily advertised as the intended way to experience the film. This past weekend, Thunderbolts* took the IMAX screens away from Sinners, and yet the film only saw a 28% drop in domestic sales from the previous weekend. It earned $33 million domestically this weekend, bringing its total domestic gross to $179 million and its worldwide total to $236 million.
This is impressive for an R-rated original film, becoming one of the most successful original releases domestically in the past decade. Clearly, Thunderbolts* did not slow the film down, so it may take another horror film to stop it. Clown in a Cornfield is the next horror release, dropping in theaters this weekend. The film has a much lower budget than Sinners, but it may still make a splash. Past that, the highly-anticipated Final Destination: Bloodlines releases in two weeks, which should give horror fans something new to chew on. Still, expect Sinners to continue performing well, as it seems like nothing can stop it. The horror video game adaptation Until Dawn debuted a week after Sinners, but the vampire flick easily cruised past it.
