Following the Gotham Awards, where Sing Sing won two awards, A24 has decided to re-release the film in theaters on January 17. Colman Domingo won the award for Outstanding Lead Performance, and Clarence Maclin won the award for Outstanding Supporting Performance. At the Gotham Awards show, Maclin stressed the importance of a film like Sing Sing and its positive message saying, “We wanted to offer a story of human beings finding light in the darkness. Men finding tenderness and the keys to enlivening their humanity as they played theater games or performed Shakespeare and found pieces of their soul trapped under the rubble of their circumstances.”
Sing Sing tells the story of a group of inmates at the Sing Sing maximum security prison who found solace through Rehabilitation Through the Arts. The film stars Domingo and Maclin, but also many formerly incarcerated men (including Maclin) who are alumni of the program at Sing Sing. The film was written and directed by Greg Kwedar and co-written by Clint Bentley. The film is based on the book The Sing Sing Follies written by John H. Richardson.
The film was initially released in July of this year, but its odd release schedule prevented many from seeing the film before it left theaters. It had a limited release where it trickled down to different theaters over a few weeks into August before finally leaving. This re-release will hopefully drum up more attention for the film in the wake of awards season, as well as let people check out the film who were unable to see it the first time around.
