Universal will roll out sing-along versions of Wicked in theaters across the nation. While the film debuts later this week on Nov. 22, these special screenings won’t begin until Christmas Day, Dec. 25. This means fans will have to wait over a month before singing along to the musical’s iconic songs.
The screenings are planned for approximately 1,000 theaters across North America, though exact locations and showtimes have yet to be announced. While rare, sing-along editions of films are not unprecedented. Similar events have been held for popular musicals such as Frozen, The Greatest Showman and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Wicked is highly anticipated by fans and is expected to make a significant impact at the box office this weekend. The film serves as a prequel to the iconic The Wizard of Oz, with Cynthia Erivo portraying Elphaba and Ariana Grande playing Glinda. The story follows their unlikely friendship during their time at school, which is tested when they confront the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
The cast also includes Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Peter Dinklage as Dr. Dillamond and Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard. Wicked is based on the Broadway musical of the same name. The stage production is one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time, and its connection to the classic The Wizard of Oz nearly guarantees the film will be a hit.
Wicked opens in theaters this weekend on Nov. 22.
