Simu Liu, star of the 2021 MCU film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, reluctantly gave some information on the development for the sequel. After news came out that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton will be directing the upcoming ‘Spider-Man 4’, the future for Shang-Chi has become uncertain.
The director was expected to direct ‘Shang-Chi 2’, but with ‘Spider-Man 4’ already in active development, the path forward for Simu Liu’s sequel is rocky. The Tom Holland-led film is currently scheduled for a late 2026 release, with ‘Shang-Chi’ having no release window as of yet.
In an interview, while doing press for his upcoming film Last Breath, Liu was asked if Destin Daniel Cretton’s involvement in ‘Spider-Man 4’ has impacted ‘Shang-Chi 2’s development. He was hesitant to say anything on the matter at first, but eventually, he said, “I don’t think anything’s been impacted. I think we’re all… I speak to Destin often and there’s nothing coming out of both of us but excitement to make this film.”
The actor is intentionally vague about the status of the film, but whether that is because he does not know or he does not want to share is up in the air. The film has had virtually no progress updates since it was announced, so do not expect the sequel to be arriving any time soon. Simu Liu will likely return as Shang-Chi in Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently supposed to hit theaters on May 1, 2026.
