Everyone is at least a little familiar with the family with one of the longest animated series in history. The Simpsons has been around for decades and is known for its very clever and hilarious writing and iconic characters throughout the years. The series was of course popular enough to have a film feature in 2007, with The Simpsons Movie, being a massive box office and critical hit. With the series still on the air today, fans have been wondering if we will ever get the sequel we were promised after the small post credit scene hint from the baby.
Series creator Matt Groening has recently stated as to why a movie sequel has not been made for the hit animated sitcom. Fans speculated that it was due to the Fox-Disney merger, however that is not the case now. Groening exclaimed that the crew does want to make a new film, however they’re still exhausted from working on the original movie. He said, “The first Simpsons Movie almost killed us. We didn’t have a B-team waiting to do The Simpsons Movie, so the same people who wrote, animated, voiced and did the music for The Simpsons TV show also did the movie. That was in 2007. We’re almost recovered, almost.”. Going from a short 22 minute long episode to an hour and a half movie is a big step for any creative team of writers and animators to accomplish and the effort showed to the satisfactions of the movie from many longtime Simpsons fans. The talks of a sequel aren’t completely ruled out as the Disney-Fox merger might be a possible reason for the sequel. Groening mentioned, “No doubt there will be another Simpsons movie one of these days. I think Disney wants something for its money.”
Fans are patiently waiting for a new Simpsons film, but the idea of TV series becoming films, despite not as popular today as it was in the late 90s-Mid 2000s, is still around. Every so often, there’s at least a few animated films based on TV shows coming out. One of the biggest examples in recent memory is another series featuring an iconic yellow character, with Spongebob SquarePants receiving a sequel to his movie in 2015 with Sponge Out of Water. It should be also noted that a 3rd Spongebob movie will be coming out on May 22nd, 2020 known as It’s a WonderFul Sponge.
Also in 2020, Fox’s other popular animated sitcom series, Bob’s Burgers, will also be receiving a movie coming on July 17th, 2020. If those films are coming out so soon for these series, then it’s likely that Homer and Bart’s Big return to the silver screen will be on the horizon soon enough.
