Simon Cowell found a new muse in an old movie star. Variety reports the former American Idol judge’s Syco Entertainment will partner with Animal Logic to develop and produce a new movie. While that isn’t a surprise considering Cowell has recently produced the two musically-driven movies One Direction: This is us and One Chance, it is surprising that his focus this time is Roaring 20’s showgirl, Betty Boop.
“Betty is an icon – I’m thrilled to be working with her,” Cowell said. “Betty, I’ve worked with some serious divas but I think you could be the biggest of them all!”
The curly-haired, short skirted cartoon made her first appearance in late 1920s. In Fleischer Studios’ Talkartoons, she became known for her flirtatious persona and the catchphrase “Boop-oop-a-doop!” Since then she has appeared in advertising campaigns with Lancome, Coca-Cola, NASCAR, Uniqlo and Chupa Chup. She has yet to appear in a movie since 1988 when she had a cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
The CEO of Fleischer Studios Mark Fleischer has expressed excitement about the project. “I am delighted to partner with Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic,” he continued,“their energy, creativity and playfulness make them a perfect fit for Betty Boop.”
No writer, director, stars or release date has been announced, but considering Boop’s long hiatus from the big screen, its expected studios will want to have her hitting up the multiplex’s very soon.
Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic are based in Sydney and Los Angeles. Their recent titles include The Lego Movie, Happy Feet, 300, Moulin Rouge, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
