Lionsgate has announced the release date for Sicario, the latest from director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners). The drug-running drama staring Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), and Benicio Del Toro (Inherent Vice) will get a limited release September 18, 2015 and a wide release on September 25.
The film follows an FBI agent (Blunt) who is exposed to the brutal world of international drug trafficking by members of a government task force (Brolin and Del Toro) in a plan to take out a Mexican cartel boss. Villeneuve is best known for directing the 2013 abduction crime drama Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhall. More recently he directed the psychological thriller Enemy that also starred Gyllenhall. This will be the first time Blunt, Brolin or Del Toro have worked with Villeneuve.
Del Toro is a regular to the genre with Snatch (2000), Traffic (2000), and The Usual Suspects (1995). Blunt is relatively new to the genre. She’s set to star in the upcoming sequel The Huntsman, while Brolin will be in the upcoming disaster adventure Everest.
Upon its wide release, Sicario will open against the horror movie The Disappointments Room, the animated sequel Hotel Transylvania 2, and the comedy The Intern.
