The DC Extended Universe is dead. Long live the Worlds of DC, Warner Bros.’ new monicker that puts all films and television shows derived from DC properties under one mammoth, gangly umbrella. Hopefully you’ve already seen the trailer for Aquaman, the first movie to be launched under the Worlds of DC branding. Following the Man of Aqua, DC plans to strike with one-two punch of Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984. Today, at the San Diego Comic-Con, the trailer dropped for the Zachary Levi-starring Shazam!, and it looks like a good time that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Shazam! chronicles the story of 14-year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel), an ordinary kid who obtains the power to turn into a grown-up superhero (Levi) by shouting “SHAZAM!” at the top of his screechy lungs. As you can imagine from watching Big, suddenly becoming a ripped, strapping Tom Hanks (er, adult) can be confusing enough. Now imagine also having super powers. Still a kid at heart, Billy clearly has a blast testing out his new abilities, and he’ll need to quickly harness his powers in order to fight Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) and his forces of evil. We all have a superhero inside us; it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out.
SHAZAM! hits theaters on April 5, 2019. Take a gander at the trailer below (exclamation point).
