Shang-Chi star Simu Liu revealed he has suffered from a torn Achilles tendon on Instagram. There are no details about how it happened, but some have speculated that it didn’t happen on a film set.
Liu has been known to participate in various competitive sports and fitness regiments, opening up the possibility of different reasons for his injury. Either way, a torn Achilles tendon takes about six months to a year to heal properly. Because of this, it is currently unknown if he will be available to perform in future projects.

Liu is set to appear in a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and the upcoming Avengers film Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. He expressed his excitement with ComicBook.com a year ago about working with Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton. According to Liu, Cretton can stay intimate with the characters despite the story’s grandiosity. Because of this, Liu said that he believes Cretton “can maintain the humanity and the human stories” while maintaining the film’s memorability.
Even if Liu’s ankle takes a while to heal, there is still a chance he can participate in The Kang Dynasty. The film is set for a May 1, 2026 release date, so they won’t start filming until approximately early spring 2024. With this in mind, Liu may soon be able to don the Ten Rings and save the world again.
