Simu Liu, the actor who plays Shang-Chi in the MCU, has teased fans with what to expect from the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Liu is doing press for his upcoming animated film, In Your Dreams, and he was asked how he would describe working on the latest Avengers film. He called it a “dream come true.” He went on to expand on that later.
“I mean, there are just so many actors in it, and getting to work with those people as peers is really incredible because I grew up watching so many of them. It feels, in a lot of ways, like a love letter to the entire genre of superhero movies. And I think there’s something really fun about that. [It’s] for all the misfits and the weirdos and the underdogs that grew up reading comic books and feeling like there was hope for them somehow – that it didn’t matter if they didn’t fit in – I think there’s just always a special place in my heart for that entire genre.”
The actor starred in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021, but has not appeared in any other MCU films since then. Doomsday will be his first appearance in an MCU film in over 5 years. His next film is the Netflix animated project In Your Drams. Earlier this year, he starred alongside Woody Harrelson in the thriller Last Breath.
Avengers: Doomsday will be the first Avengers film since Endgame back in 2019, a 7 year gap in releases. Since then, the MCU has changed course several times, including swapping out Kang the Conqueror for Doctor Doom as its central villain. The film will feature much of the cast from previous Avengers films as well as Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Plot details are still under wraps for the film, but with the announcement of several actors from the Fox X-Men films such as James Marsden, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming and Rebecca Romijn, it may be a multiverse story, or even an Avengers vs. X-Men story. With the popularity of X-Men ’97 and Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel seems eager to include mutants in their upcoming films. The film is currently scheduled to release on December 18, 2026. That is the same day as Dune: Part Three, so expect a busy holiday season.
