The new trailer for Gregg Araki’s White Bird in a Blizzard has premiered, with Shailene Woodley (Divergent) playing a young woman beginning to explore her sexuality just before her mother, played by Eva Green (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) mysteriously disappears. The movie also features Christopher Meloni (TV’s Law & Order: SVU), Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), Thomas Jane (The Punisher), and Angela Bassett (TV’s American Horror Story: Coven).
It is the first film in four years from director Gregg Araki. Araki’s films tend to have a surrealistic, dream-like element to them, and the trailer for White Bird in a Blizzard seems to be consistent with that.
The trailer highlights Woodley’s somewhat fractured relationship with her mother, as well as her intimate romance with an older man (played by Thomas Jane), while her father and her struggle to deal with the disappearance her mother.
For Woodley, who starred in two films adapted from massively popular young adult novels earlier this year (Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars), the film is a movement towards more adult driven efforts.
White Bird in a Blizzard is an adaptation of the 1999 novel by Laura Kasischke of the same name. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival (it also played at this summer’s Fantasia Festival) and will be released on VOD September 25th, and in limited theatrical release on October 24th. It is being distributed by Magnolia Pictures.
