Shailene Woodley Could Star in Oliver Stone’s Upcoming Edward Snowden Movie

Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars) is in talks to join Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) in Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden film, according to The Hollywood ReporterThe role would reportedly be that of Snowden’s girlfriend, Lindsay Mills.

Although this project would be the first time Woodley and Gordon-Levitt have worked together, they do share a working relationship with notable indie director Gregg Araki. Woodley was most recently seen in Araki’s White Bird in Blizzard, and Gordon-Levitt worked with the director for 2004’s Mysterious Skin. Woodley also had higher profile turns this year in the aforementioned The Fault in Our Stars, as well as Divergent. Both those films have made her a highly sought-after young talent, who along with Gordon-Levitt, could prove to be a big score for director Stone.

Lindsay Mills was recently included in the Snowden documentary CitizenfourIn the media, Mills was constantly portrayed as a woman abandoned by Snowden after he leaked intelligence information and fled to Russia. The documentary, however, sheds light on some of the unknown aspects of their relationship, including the fact that Mills has actually been living with the whistleblower in Moscow since July. Stone’s film could ultimately provide audiences with the details between Mills and Snowden that the media had not previously covered, and prove to be a critical role for Woodley, if she is indeed cast.

The Untitled Snowden project is set to begin production in January in Germany. The film is to be based off of two books, Luke Harding’s The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man, and Time of the Octopus, an upcoming novel by Snowden’s lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.
