According to Variety, Seth MacFarlane and Keith and Kenneth Lucas are in development of a reboot of the 1984 film Revenge of the Nerds for 20th Century Studios.
MacFarlane is on as producer through his company Fuzzy Door. MacFarlane has taken a step away from movies, in which he was quite prolific in around the time early last decade where he hosted the Oscars. Currently he has a plethora of shows he is producing including his long running tv series Family Guy.
Keith and Kenneth Lucas names are not immediately recognizable, but their roles in 22 Jump Street as well as their story in the upcoming LaKeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya led Judas and the Black Messiah show that they will be in the industry for a while. This is another huge project for the brothers as they will be writing and starring in the film. Alex Rubens, longtime comedic writer for series such as Rick & Morty, Key & Peele, and Community is onboard to co-write with the Lucas brothers.
The film will deal with the term ‘nerd’ and ‘geek,’ specifically with how those words have changed in the contemporary 21st Century. Superheroes, space adventures, and board games are now considered to be very awesome in the mainstream. It will certainly be intriguing to see if there will be a ‘jock’ vs ‘nerd’ matchup, similar to the original film.
However, it is certainly possible that the film will try and replicate the success of Phil Lord and Chris Miller franchises such as The Lego Movies and the Jump Street films. Something meta that brings an old property back into the contemporary conversation. Though, the question remains: how many 80’s meta reboots can Hollywood make until it gets stale?
No production date is set, though the project is quite exciting.
