A sequel to the 1997 slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer has been announced to be in the works.
Via Deadline, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is set to direct the sequel. Robinson directed last year’s Do Revenge, wrote last year’s Thor: Love and Thunder, and was a consultant producer on Hawkeye (2021).
We’ve also learned that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr are in talks to reprise their roles from the original 1997 film. According to Deadline, insiders claim that the project is in early development, with Neal H. Moritz potentially returning as producer and Leah McKendrick writing the script.
Robinson’s and McKendrick’s pitched the movie idea last fall, reportedly blowing away studio execs. Deadline reported that Sony saw the importance in not simply rebooting the franchise but doing a “passing of the torch” where the original actors of the 1997 film could return alongside new cast members.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) follows a group of four teenagers stalked by a mysterious killer a year after they dumped a body in the ocean and agreed never to talk about it.
Robinson and McKendrick’s new film will not be the first sequel to the film. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) also brought back original cast members Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. And I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006) was another sequel but with no returning cast members. There also was the TV series I Know What You Did Last Summer (2021).
There was also supposed to be a remake of the original film in 2016, with Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard writing the script, but the film was ultimately never released.
