It has been a strange weekend for the box office leading into the first day of February. Despite being a typically slow time of year for theaters, there were still a few surprises. Most notably, the new Melania documentary, which smashed records for the largest premiere for a doc at 7 million, despite a critical bombing. The target demographic of audience came out in droves to see the film, mostly conservative-leaning women, which helped boost the film even though it has still fallen shy of its initial 8 million projection. After much controversy, including accusations of Amazon trying to gain political favor with the massive 40 million production budget, Melania is set to continue to do well, and one would hope so with a reported 35 million advertising budget. Amazon has not announced if it has plans for a streaming premiere anytime soon, but it’s pretty safe to say it will likely be available this upcoming Presidents day. Despite all this buzz, Melania is not the first place finisher; instead, the top three are as follows.
Send Help from 20th Century takes the crown for this weekend with 20 million for it’s premiere showing it’s action pack offerings are worth checking out. Having taken first, it was trailed closely behind by a completely new challenger in the ring. From YouTube personality Markiplier, Mark Edward Fischbach, with his new Markiplier Studios, premiered their first film, Iron Lung, to both critical and audience adoration with much success. The indie production had a 17.8 million opening weekend and is another notch in the tally of team Markiplier wins. Even though it took second, Iron Lung is off to a great start in cementing a new player in the Indie film game.
Coming in third was Melania with the 7 million, having just managed to gain enough ground to pass Disney’s juggernaut Zootopia 2, which, after a staggering ten weeks in theaters, still saw 5.8 million, keeping it in the top five. Fourth may have gone to Zootopia 2, but Shelter, another indie film in it’s primierie, just nearly took it with 5.5 million.
The bottom five were filled out by Avatar: Fire and Ash with 5.5 million, too, after seven weeks in theaters, clawing its way up to the billion club with its sister films. Mercy dropped all the way to seventh for its second week, only seeing 4.73 million after a rough start, thanks to last weekend’s winter storm that took out half the country’s usual theater traffic.
Eighth was The Housemaid, still lingering with 3.5 million after seven weeks as well. A24’s own darling record breaker Marty Supreme landed in ninth with 2.9 million also after seven weeks.
Tenth for this week goes to 28 Years Later: Bone Temple with 1.6 million after three weeks, cementing it right now as the lowest performing of the series.
