Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers) has signed on to star with Paul Rudd (This Is 40) for the drama The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, according to Deadline. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Jonathan Evison.
The film follows Ben (Rudd), who’s a caregiver for a Trevor, a teenager dealing with advanced stages of a rare muscular dystrophy disease. Gomez will play Dot, a hitchiker who joins them on a road trip. Trevor develops a crush on Dot due to her forwardness and lack of awkwardness about his disease.
Since Gomez starred in Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, the actress has moved to primarily indie fare, including the 2014 comedy Behaving Badly. She will also be returning to lend her voice in Hotel Transylvania 2. Rudd recently drew attention for the trailer for Marvel’s Ant-Man, which debuted last week. The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving certainly looks like a more quiet effort for the actor, along the lines of Prince Avalanche or Admission.
This is the second directorial effort for Rob Burnett, who also adapted the novel. His previous feature credit was the comedy We Made This Movie. The Fundamentals of Caregiving will start filming at the end of the month. No release date has been announced.
