In Dukale’s Dream, a documentary directed by Josh Rothstein, actor Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and wife Deborra Lee-Furness travel to Ethiopia to bring unethical coffee trading practices to light. The hero of Jackman’s story is a coffee farmer named Dukale who is forced to sell his product below market value due to the economic circumstances of the region.
The documentary features Jackman as he experiences the day-to-day life of the farmer, from working in the fields to brewing the coffee directly, in an attempt to understand the reality of the situation and find solutions to improve the quality of life. The documentary is not only about the market, but individuals and their livelihoods as well.
In the trailer, Jackman claims that “the simplicity of coffee can actually tackle some of the biggest issues the planet’s facing,” adding “it’s not the way things should be, and it’s not the way things have to be.” For this reason, Jackman urges viewers to buy only Fair Trade coffee, that this simple act will make a difference in the lives of the growers.
Dukale’s Dream will hit select theaters on June 5 before its VOD release on July 14.
