Secret Mall Apartment, a new documentary feature that premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival back in March 2024, has just released a public trailer. The film, which is directed by Jeremy Workman and executive produced by Jesse Eisenberg, tells the story of 8 Rhode Islanders who secretly built an apartment inside of a mall. After noticing an anomaly in the construction of the Providence Mall in the early 2000s, the group of friends took the opportunity to use that space to their advantage. The group managed to keep the apartment a secret for over 4 years, with authorities finally finding it in 2007 and charging the group with trespassing.
The film is largely shot using old footage from the residents who filmed many of their experiences building and living in the apartment over the 4 years they used it. It is also intercut with interviews with the friends years after the apartment was discovered.
This is Jeremy Workman’s second collaboration with Jesse Eisenberg, with Eisenberg producing the 2018 film The World Before Your Feet back in 2018. Secret Mall Apartment is set to see a public release sometime in 2025, with the specifics of its distribution and method of release still unclear.
