Dreamworks Animation is kicking off 2020 by making one of their more recent hits into a big franchise. Trolls: World Tour is the new upcoming sequel to the hit 2016 Disney animated musical based on the popular toy line of Troll Dolls, which was a modest success with a box office gross of $347 million and fairly positive critic reviews. Naturally a sequel was bound to happen and World Tour marks the first second installment for a Dreamworks property since How to Train Your Dragon 2 back in 2014. The film saw its second trailer premiere fairly recently.
This new trailer starts out at the world of the techno trolls, partying up to Daft Punk’s One More Time. That is until their party is ambushed by Queen Barb and the rock trolls, who plans to steal the six strings from each Troll world that helps power their music and unite them in order to destroy all music except for rock. This convinces Poppy and her friends to put a stop to Barb’s plan and save the entire troll world. Throughout the rest of the trailer, we see Poppy and the others go through various set pieces in what seems to be another music romp in the world of trolls. The trailer ends with a quick little gag of them being hypnotized by the appealing music of a jazz troll.
The first film was popular for its use of licensed songs and colorful visuals. The sequel seems to be amplifying these elements big time, as the trailer is filled with so many bright colors and a variety of music. With most of Dreamworks recent franchises like Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon coming to an end recently, Trolls seems to be the next property with franchise potential. If this sequel performs about on par or even better than the 2016 film, then Dreamworks will do their best to have Princess Poppy and her friends become faces of their company.
Trolls: World Tour is set for release April 17th 2020. Watch the full trailer below:
