Searchlight Pictures Releases ‘Kinds of Kindness’ Trailer

Searchlight Pictures released the trailer for the upcoming erotic comedy Kinds of Kindness. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things), the film will consist of three interconnected stories exploring human connection and eroticism.

Kinds of Kindness sees the return of Yorgos Lanthimos to mainstream theaters after the success of his alt-history science fiction feature, Poor Things. In addition to Lanthimos, Emma Stone will return and star in this film, reuniting with fellow Poor Things actors Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe.

Producer Ed Guiney described the setting as “a non-specific place, one that is sort of removed from our own,” indicating a return to form for Lanthimos, who has directed films with similarly ambiguous settings like The Lobster. When asked to describe the story, actor Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad) explained that each story deals with different forms of connection and intimacy. These connections include a father and son, a strained marriage, and “the security that faith provides.” “Some of Yorgos’ characters feel like their own islands, desperately trying to reach each other. It’s awkward and uncomfortable and tragic and funny,” Plemons said.

Lanthimos explained that he and cowriter Efthimis Filippou started the project as a single story before branching into three. “As we identified the subsequent stories, we wanted to keep a thematic thread, so it felt as if it all belonged under the same umbrella,” Lanthimos described. As a result, every actor in the film will play three different characters from each story, which they describe as a triptych, work of art divided into three sections. “The stories weave together in a way that is not necessarily clear but capitalizes on what has come before,” Stone further explained, according to Slashfilm.

Kinds of Kindness will expose its audience to Lanthimos’ unique style on June 21, 2024.
