Directed by Sean McNamara, Bau: Artist at War tells the story of real Holocaust survivor Joseph Bau.
The film stars Emile Hirsch as artist Joseph Bau. The Holocaust feature will reach theaters on Jan. 24, 2025. Showbiz Direct and Republic Pictures are distributing the movie. The cast list includes Inbar Lavi, Josh Zuckerman, Brittany Mitchell, Adam Tsekham, Eugene Lipinski, Michael Benyaer, Josh Blacker, and Yan Tual.
Bau: Artist at War follows Joseph Bau, an artist, who used his skills and humor to bring hope to the Nazi concentration camps amidst the times of war and pain. Although life is difficult, he finds love and fights to stay alive.
McNamara spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about his eagerness to share the film, “So excited to share the Bau trailer with the world. This is a story that the world needs to see, to remind us of the power of hope in even the darkest times. It’s a powerful testament to resilience, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it.”
The trailer depicts a world in black and white where Hirsch is seen spreading happiness and hope in a place filled with anguish and despair. “I’m just trying to give people hope. If you want justice you’re going to have to survive.” Hirsch says as Bau.
The screenplay was written by Deborah Smerecnik, Ron Bass and Sonia Kifferstein based on Bau’s memoir. Producers include McNamara, Smerecnik, David Brookwell, Marc Griffith and Michelle P. Griffith.
Bau: Artist at War had a successful festival run, taking best picture at the Sunscreen Film Festival, Myrtle Beach Festival, and Tarzana International Film Festival.
Bau: Artist at War will be released in theaters on Jan. 24, 2025.
