Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner Anora, the tale of a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian Oligarch, is set to open in limited release on Oct. 13 from indie movie studio, Neon. Making a major splash at Cannes this past month, Neon looks to add another critically acclaimed gem to its collection.
Previous releases such as Parasite, Triangle of Sadness, and Anatomy of a Fall have all been major talking points of their respective awards seasons, with Parasite winning Best Picture at the Oscars in 2020. In a review for Variety, Peter Deluge described the film as “a rowdy Safdie-style movie about two cultures (Russian and American), two languages (Russian and English) and two currencies (money and sex),” as well as anointing the film as “the uncut gem of this year’s Cannes competition.”
Starring Mikey Madison as Anora, a sex worker from Brooklyn, and Mark Eidelstein as the drug-addled son of a Russian Oligarch, audiences can expect incredible performances from the leads of one of the most anticipated releases of the fall film season. With Baker’s directing credits that include hit indie films such as Tangerine, The Florida Project, and Bottle Rocket, audiences will not want to miss Baker’s latest addition to the indie film genre.
