Scream VI opened last Friday and finished the weekend at the box office at $44.5 million, setting a record opening for any film from the franchise. With the success of Scream VI at the box office, the SXSW premiere of Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and nine Oscar nominations for this Sunday, this could mean a successful weekend for Paramount Pictures.
The successful turnout for the sixth film in the Scream franchise is mainly on the social media marketing campaign, social media analytics corp RelishMix measured. With a social media reach of 360.8 million, the film beat out M3GAN with a social media reach of 330.3 million. “The Scream fan base has been infiltrating TikTok at 771K subscribers and another 349M #views, keeping in mind that the franchise pages have 11M connected fans and growing.”
With the social media following, a famous Super Bowl commercial, and the popular cast’s appeal to younger audiences (including Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega), it was no doubt the film wouldn’t have been a success.
Coming in second at the box office was Michael B. Jordan’s Creed III, similarly having a record opening for its franchise. Landing in third was Sony’s film 65, a prehistoric sci-fi film led by Adam Driver. Though expected to debut in the single digits, the film pulled in $12.3 million at this weekend’s box office.
