This weekend is gonna be quite a scream for the box office. The seventh and latest entry in the Scream franchise has been released, and is already eyeing the best opening of 2025 so far.
After moving to a small town, Sidney Prescott is finally able to move on from the horrors of her past and live a happy, quiet life. But when a new killer begins to come after her, Sidney has to put everything she holds dear at stake if she can hope to stop this threat once and for all.
Hollywood Reporter notes that the early estimates show the film on track to make roughly $40 million domestically in its first weekend. Other estimates from other sources suggest higher numbers, but not quite breaking the $50 million barrier. Regardless, it’ll become the best opening of 2026 so far.
Hollywood Reporter also noted that, if the numbers hold, this will also be the best opening of the entire Scream franchise. The previous top total for the franchise opening was $44.4 million, which belonged to Scream VI.
Since the franchise was brought back in 2022 with Scream, the slasher series was able to revitalize its status as a box office darling. As the fifth entry in the franchise, it had a successful opening of $30 million after debuting mid-January. It capped off its domestic run at $81 million, per BoxOfficeMojo, only to then be shown up by Scream VI with final stateside total of $108 million.
