Dredd, the 2012 sci-fi actioneer starring Karl Urban, is looking to lay down the law on a new streaming platform, Max, in February, MovieWeb reports. An adaptation of the characters and stories from the 2000 AD comic books, the film follows the titular Judge in his dystopian metropolis home of Mega-City One as he becomes trapped in an apartment complex ruled by a notorious drug lord while training a rookie officer.
Officially directed by Pete Travis and written by Civil War director Alex Garland (who reportedly ghost-directed most of it), Dredd is now set to launch on the Max streaming service on February 1st.
Initially released to rave reviews, earning an 80% Certrified Fresh Critical Rating and 72% Audience Rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but poor box office, earning only $41 million on a budget that ranged from between $30-45 million, Dredd has since developed a passionate cult following on home video, with fans clamoring for a sequel.
Discussions have ranged from a prequel that Urban hinted at in previous interview to a possible TV series, with the owner of the Dredd IP, Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion, mentioning a rights issue as a reason for the delay for a follow-up but, so far, no further updates have been made.
Along with Urban, Dredd also stars Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Domnhall Gleeson, Wood Harris, and Langley Kirkwood.
