Actress Scarlett Johansson is putting her foot down firmly about the misuse of artificial intelligence. Her response to it comes in the wake of controversy in which her likeness was used against her knowledge. Kanye West, or known as his X (formerly Twitter) handle, Ye, began a string of highly antisemitic posts on his account. Following up his posts was a shirt added to his Shopify, since taken down, with a Swastika on it.
Eventually, a video surfaced created by Ori Bejerano, which showcased an AI-generated likeness of Johansson, as well as several other names in Hollywood, speaking against West’s actions and his comments on X.
CNN, while initially reporting on Johansson’s statement, stated that the video was posted to Instagram by Bejerano, with a caption translated from Hebrew. The caption of the video makes it clear that Bejerano has no tolerance for West’s comments, calling for a firmer crackdown on social media when it comes to content like this.
Despite the intentions, Johansson didn’t take kindly to her own likeness being used without her approval.
In her official statement, Johansson began by acknowledging the video, and clearly stating that it was not something she was aware of to begin with.
“I am a Jewish woman who has no tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech of any kind. But I also firmly believe that the potential for hate speech multiplied by Al is a far greater threat than any one person who takes accountability for it,” she said. She would continue by elaborating on the growing dangers of AI, and how cautious people should be about it.
