In the same article reporting on the casting for DC and Warner Bros’ Suicide Squad film, Deadline also mentioned the potential casting of Scarlett Johansson in a live-action adaptation of another comic book. Masamune Shirow’s comic Ghost in the Shell was adapted into a critically acclaimed animated film in 1995. With a critically acclaimed actress like Johansson (see most reviews of Her) involved, DreamWorks’ planned American Ghost in the Shell has the potential to go over better than most American adaptations of Japanese animation.
Though the Avengers and Lucy hasn’t said yes to the role yet, a reported $10 million offer from DreamWorks seems hard to pass up – for us regular people, at least. Interestingly, one of the possible Suicide Squad cast members, Margot Robbie was apparently offered the same role as Johansson – presumably lead character, Major Makoto Kusanagi, or whatever her name would be changed to for an American film – but apparently she turned it down.
