The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first major motion picture of 2020 is a highly requested one. Black Widow is set to be the first movie of Phase 4 after such a high demand from fans, who have wanted a Natasha Romanoff solo film for a long time. Rumor has it, however, that Black Widow might become it’s own stand alone franchise.
During a recent Women in Hollywood event, Scarlett Johansson stated that Black Widow is the first Marvel film to hire one of its actors as a producer on the film as well. Johansson even referred to the upcoming film as a standalone franchise, meaning that there could be multiple solo films separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s no no real confirmation on a Black Widow sequel yet, but Johansson’s recent claim easily hints of that possibility.
Black Widow being more of a potential franchise than intended could be a big win for Marvel. Considering the character was killed off recently in Avengers: Endgame, this could be seen as a good way for Natasha Romanoff to remain in future Marvel films despite her current situation. With the MCU having a ton of solo film series (i.e. the Iron Man, Thor and Captain America trilogies), it would only make sense for one of Marvel’s most iconic female heroes to have a trilogy of her own.
Black Widow is set for release on May 1st 2020.
