It remains to be seen whether or not there will be any future additions to the popular Saw horror movie franchise, but that doesn’t mean you’ve seen the last of the villain Jigsaw. Today Lionsgate announced that they will be re-releasing the original Saw into theaters for one week starting – you guessed it – October 31st.
The movie was originally released in 2004 and became a surprise hit, grossing over $100 million worldwide on a shoestring budget and spawning a franchise that includes a total of seven movies overall. The last of the bunch, Saw 3D, was released the week before Halloween in 2010, the same calendar week as every entry in the series. Though there have been rumors of an eighth movie being currently in development, nothing has been confirmed as of yet.
The original was directed by James Wan and based on a story by Wan and Leigh Whannell, who are now both well-known names in the horror genre. They would later collaborate on the first Saw sequel, as well as the first two installments of the Insidious franchise. Whannell is currently directing the third film in that series. Wan, in addition to directing 2013’s horror hit The Conjuring, also directed the upcoming Fast & Furious 7.
When the original Saw hits theaters again this October it will go up against other Halloween hopefuls that include the Daniel Radcliffe horror-comedy Horns, the Nicole Kidman memory-loss-thriller Before I Go To Sleep, horror anthology sequel The ABCs of Death 2, and the Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Nightcrawler.
